Chapter One: The Beginning of the End
This chapter deals with what you have to do to consciously prepare for death. It talks about the different states of consciousness you need to develop as you approach death. Also, we discuss two main life skills needed in your approach. First is self-trust, which enables you to confidently use inner resources. Second is your self-image or what part of you is the best way to make your approach complete, comfortable and inspiring.
Chapter Two: Inner Work, Focus and Techniques
This chapter is a more in-depth study of how to develop the life skills needed in the conscious approach. It teaches you how to gather your will, so you have clarity and focus in your approach. It talks about meditation, which brings powerful inner resources in your subconscious mind to play a significant role. One of the main focuses is having your approach be an expression of inner wisdom instead of an anxious mind, so your approach is fulfilling.
Chapter Three: My Poetic View
A poetic view of approaching death allows your deepest inner wisdom to answer questions and express emotions as you express your heart. These poems are divided into four categories; surrender, silence, approaching death, prayers. Poems on surrender explore a main ingredient in a conscious approach. Poems on silence explore the wisdom of the body, which can give you a spiritual perspective. Poems on approaching death explore the perspective you have, the problems you face and the rewards gained by approaching death consciously. Poems on prayer focus on how I talk to God in a sincere, casual way.
End Note: Writing Your Own End and Conclusion
One of the most important things you can do to really learn this book is write a copy of your own End. This will be a book that describes the way that you are going to approach death. After reading my book thoroughly, record the issues you will be dealing with as you face death and how you will deal with them. That will create your End.

Too many people view death as tragic. Their focus is in the rearview mirror as they mourn what they are leaving behind. Of course, mourning is healthy as long as you are aware and conscious of where you are going. This is a natural process. Sometimes when I say I want to die, it leads to mourning and I cry. I welcome emotional release, because I do not want my approach to death to be an intellectual exercise.
Our focus comes from awareness flowing through the creations of our mind. The real change of life does not happen when you think about things differently; it happens when you change your focus. When you are hungry, you think about food, but to satisfy your hunger, you need to actually eat the food. In healing, you cannot just focus on the thoughts of your illness to heal; you have to connect to the Wisdom of your Body and activate inner resources. In consciously approaching death, you have to go beyond the thoughts of dying to enter Silence to be complete.
As we approach death, many of us focus on the left hemisphere in our thoughts about death. In this chapter, we will explore creativity and how it connects us to the experiences of our body. Often, if we only focus on thinking, we become very anxious with the end of life. I want to introduce you to a creative approach to the end of life. This is where you can translate the things you think about into a poetic or any creative expression. This approach involves the whole brain and it has a creative way of preparing you to let go of your life for a peaceful passing.
One of my problems as my MS got worse was being able to focus with linear thinking. I found it much easier to create ideas through writing poetry. In this chapter, I want to share the creative flashes that developed my poetic view. I have arranged them in four categories: surrender, silence, approaching death and prayers.
In this book, as I am preparing to die, I see that spiritual aspirations that I pursued my entire adult life are serving me incredibly in my ultimate challenge.
It is important to have clear priorities when you face death. What is the most important thing to you? Life is the most important thing, even if you are dying.
The quality of life does not depend on the health of your body; it depends on your focus.
In your final days, being committed to thinking does not always serve you. Meditation can create a path, so you can consciously decide to rest in silence and activate The Wisdom of Your Body.

Marc Lerner has been a life skills coach for 25 years and has been working to empower patient participation, to improve the quality of life and to improve attitudes when facing challenges. Marc has had multiple sclerosis since 1981, which is an incurable disease. He had to tap inner resources to cope with his illness because he could not rely completely on help from medical professionals. Now, Marc teaches life skills, including ways to develop a positive self-image, confidence and self-trust. In 1982, Marc founded Life Skills Institute and served as its president to 2013. Through the Institute, he worked for 25 years at the VA with veterans with PTSD, cancer and AIDS patients and the mentally ill homeless. In 2002, Marc was named Outstanding American with Disabilities Business Person in Los Angeles.
